What happens when that MRAP gets stuck and can't be pulled out? Or when they are trying to conduct a recon in a vehicle with a 10 foot tall profile? I would think as many as are needed to insure the safety and security of our soldiers. It doesn't necessarily insure safety or security. If we can't accept that, then we shouldn't have a military, or a nation state that military defends. Bullshit, its war, people are going to die, there are going to be accidents, there are going to be fuck ups. What that meant was that I was now hamstrung by mission requirements imposed by risk averse officers who think that any loss is too many. And yet every time I left the wire I had to haul everything, and the end result was me gassing out climbing up stairs, or me having trouble climbing over walls, because my basic combat load was over 75 lbs. There were quite a few operations I wouldnt' even have brought any plates at all. When I was in Iraq I carried a crippling large combat load, including utterly useless side plates which I would never have carried if it was up to me. If we flipped out every time a few guys died with knee jerk "This can never happen again!" then what happens the next time to complete the mission a unit is denied what they need, which is to run light? Next time our SF guys get handed the reins of a horse and told to follow a warlord, but have to politely turn him down because they're not allowed to operate without MRAPs or more armored vehicles. There is a time when SF might need to get by riding flesh and blood horses. There are times when uparmored vehicles aren't practical. The only military force who ever went into combat with everything they wanted, not just equipment and resources, but the very best of leadership, even sufficient sleep, is the military that doesn't exist.
